Nutrition

HideShow

We have been providing nutritional information about our food since 1984.

In 2003, we became the first company in our sector to embark on a project of extensive recipe reformulation focusing primarily on salt reduction. Over the past six years, through technological innovations and the reformulation of many of our core menu items, we have dramatically reduced salt content across our menu.

Since 1993 we have reduced the saturated fat content of our cooking oil by 35% (from 47% to 12%). We have also eliminated all hydrogenated vegetable oils from our entire menu so that levels of Trans Fatty Acids (TFAs) are below 2%.

We have extended our menu to increase the number and range of options available for our customers, on both the children's Happy Meal menu and on our main menu. Customers can now choose from a range of additional items that have not previously been available, including porridge (breakfast menu), Little Tasters, Deli sandwiches, fruit bags, carrot sticks, salads (including salad dressings, which are all less than 3% fat), Tropicana orange juice, Robinson's Fruit Shoot drinks, organic semi-skimmed milk and Buxton mineral water.

Community

HideShow

We are committed to the 1,200 communities we serve across the UK, with grassroots activities in football, litter and charity which contribute to the local community.

Our Football in the Community Programme has created some 20,000 new volunteer community coaches across the UK to increase access to free qualified coaching for youngsters everywhere. Together with the FA, we will help to improve the standards of the game at grassroots level and to support all 200,000 coaches and 400,000 volunteers in grassroots football.

Every restaurant is expected to send out a minimum of three litter patrols each day, who clear all litter - not just McDonald's - from the local community. We are determined to play our part in tackling a problem we all find frustrating.

Our support for RMHC has created accommodation for the families of sick children in and around children's hospitals across the UK, giving support and reassurance to thousands of families.

Food Sourcing

HideShow

We believe passionately in using quality ingredients and working with suppliers we know and trust.

We are a good customer of the British farmer and we are proud of our long-term relationships with our suppliers.

Our tea, coffee and hot chocolate is all Rainforest Alliance certified. Our fish for our fishfingers and Filet O' Fish is all sourced from Marine Stewardship Council approved fisheries.

We've worked with our free range egg suppliers to ensure all our free range eggs have an enriched environment, with tree cover to encourage wider ranging. And we're working with our pork suppliers to improve living conditions further to remove the need for tail docking.

We are committed to maintaining industry leading animal welfare standards. We have received three RSPCA awards in the last five years, including one for Good Business Innovation in 2009.

Our ingredients

HideShow

We only use 100% beef with nothing added, just a pinch of salt and pepper when cooking.

We use nothing but quality beef, always whole cuts of forequarter and flank from British and Irish cattle. Our bottled milk for drinking and for our teas and coffees is all organic. All our eggs are free range, including all the egg we use in our marinades and sauces.

We source quality ingredients from over 17,000 British and Irish farmers. In 2009 this included all our beef, free range eggs, pork, organic milk and much of our salad, apples and carrots when in season.

Environment

HideShow

We recycle our used cooking oil into bio-diesel to power our delivery fleet.

We are committed to improving the environmental sustainability of our business. We cut underlying electricity use by 10% across our restaurants in 2009 and will continue to make reductions.

By diverting the waste from 36 of our restaurants in Sheffield and London to Energy from Waste facilities, we have achieved a 48% carbon saving compared with waste to landfill.

We are researching the changes that could be made to beef farming practices to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with a detailed study of emissions currently underway in farms across the country.

All our restaurants have individual litter patrol plans in place; our employees walk almost 3,000 miles a week, a total of 150,000 miles a year, collecting local litter.

All our cardboard packaging is made from at least 70% post-industrial recycled paper.
