Our food: Lettuce

Garden Side Salad

Our food: Lettuce

Our lettuce

In our premium salads we use six varieties of lettuce including: Iceberg, Romaine, Carrot, Lollo Rosso, Tatsoi and Spinach.

Supporting British farmers

During the English growing season - May to October - we source our lettuce from farms in East Anglia and Sussex.

Ensuring freshness

During harvesting the lettuce is quickly cooled to 2°C to retain crispness. In the summer months, lettuce is available for preparation within two hours.

Being environmentally aware

In the UK, water recycling is used to irrigate the crops during the summer months, while the waste lettuce is used as compost.

Your questions answered

Do you add salt to this salad?

No. McDonald's does not add salt to any of its salads. However there is salt as an ingredient in the Grilled Chicken Pieces, the Crispy Chicken Pieces and the Bacon. The dressings also contain salt, approximately 1g per portion.

Is this salad gluten free?

The Garden Salad with Balsamic dressing is gluten free, however the Caesar dressing contains a small amount of gluten. For your convenience, a list of all items which contain gluten is available in McDonald's restaurants on the reverse of the tray liners.

Where do your lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes come from?

McDonald's uses lettuce grown in the UK, Holland or France from May to October, and then sourced from Spain for the winter months. Cucumbers are grown in the UK or Holland and our tomatoes are sourced from Spain or Morocco, depending upon availability.

Does this salad count as part of my five a day fruit & veg?

Yes. The Carrot Sticks, Fruit Bags and Garden Side Salad all contribute as 1 of your 5-a-day fruit and vegetable portions whilst any of McDonald's Premium Salads count as 2 portions.
