Calling all mums
Together with the mums of some of the UK's top footballers we are campaigning to encourage more mums to become qualified grassroots coaches.
Finnula McNally
Cowley, Oxfordshire
Mums on the ball squad
As a busy working mum to two boys, Finnula always wanted to get more involved with her children's love of football but felt intimidated and under- qualified. However with the launch of the McDonald's Mums On The Ball campaign, Finnula got a place on a course with her local county FA and is now a qualified football coach at her local primary school.
"The school has never had a football team before and my new coaching qualification has meant that the children at my local primary school can now get involved in the game and take up extra-curricular activities. The response to my sessions has been amazing and I recently took the team to their first inter-school competition which we won!"
"If you have children who are involved with the game, it gives you a great understanding of it. Everyone finds it hard to believe that I am now a qualified football coach and have my own pair of football boots, but I can now play with my children and their friends and we have great fun."
Why mums?
Because they:
- can plan and organise
- have patience
- can discipline
- have good communication skills
- understand the need to play and be creative
- are good at confidence building
- understand the value of team spirit
and that's exactly what we look for in a good coach.

"The course was great! I didn't own a pair of football boots when I started but i'm now a qualified coach - it's a real achievement!"
