The FA Community Shield

Sponsored by McDonald's

In 2013, the traditional curtain raiser to the season saw Manchester United return to Wembley to compete for the FA Community Shield for the 29th time, taking on underdogs Wigan Athletic who had already beaten the odds to lift The FA Cup earlier in the year. Over 80,000 fans created an electric atmosphere on the day, and after taking an early lead, Robin Van Persie netted again in the second half to secure Manchester United’s 2 – 0 win to take home the Shield.

As our annual celebration of Community Football, we invited inspirational grassroots football coaches and volunteers from across the country to be recognised at the national Community Awards ceremony, grassroots clubs to take part in a special team parade around the pitch before kick off, and lucky children to walk out with the teams as McDonald’s Player Escorts.

The day's action might be over but you can find out about the other opportunities available through McDonald’s KickStart throughout the year – from inspirational Player Escort experiences to invaluable Coaching support for your club – by clicking here.
